Microsoft BI and Teradata POC

We have recently been engaged alongside Microsoft with a leading high street bank to jointly build a Proof of Concept that demonstrates that Microsoft technologies are the correct complementary toolset to wrap around the enterprise data warehouse platform Teradata. During the POC we successfully interacted with Teradata via Analysis Services and surfaced information in Reporting Services, Excel Services and PowerPivot within SharePoint 2010.
The central objective of the POC was to demonstrate the use of Microsoft BI to report from Teradata. The approach demonstrated the following general qualities:
  • Low cost solution
  • Good performance
  • Ease of use
  • Rapid development
  • Low maintenance
  • Supports both standard ‘canned’ reports and also ad hoc analysis and reporting
The POC solution involved a SQL Server Analysis Services (AS) cube connected directly against a set of tables on a Teradata database. Formal reporting against the cube was demonstrated via a set of SQL Server Reporting Services (RS) reports. Capabilities for ad hoc analysis are showcased by connecting Excel to the cube and reports have also been deployed via Excel Services in SharePoint to demonstrate the flexibility and power of widespread information distribution and analysis.
